Introduction The tangible products of our world are made from materials, some resulting from natural forces and others from manufacturing. Regardless of the source, the performance we expect from a product depends critically on the materials in that product. For manufactured products, the reliability of the prediction of performance is dependent on the reliability of the materials data used to design and plan the manufacture of the product. In the past most products were made from materials that were produced separately from the product manufacture; for example, first the steel was made, then the car panel pressed. However, today more and more materials are produced only upon the manufacture of the part itself. This and other changes put more emphasis on the availability of reliable data characterizing the structure and performance of a material. Over the years the importance of reliable materials data has been recognized [1-8], and many groups have mounted major efforts to collect and evaluate data on different types of materials and for different types of properties. In this article we define what is meant by data evaluation, how it is done for materials data, who does it and why, and some changes in our world which are affecting how we approach materials data.
